Over the last few years, the world has become a lot more aware of pollution and the effect of climate change on our planet. With help from environmentalists and activists, a lot of the harsh truths have come to light about how we are destroying nature and killing our animals.
The beauty industry is one of the main culprits for wasteful and environmentally-damaging packaging creating 120 billion units of it every year. On top of this, Garnier found that 56% of Brits do not recycle their bathroom products due to simple inconvenience. Figures like these are disappointing because we as humans are 100% responsible for this damage and if everyone did their part we would all be a lot better off.
Below I have listed 3 amazing brands who are doing great things for the environment already and are totally worth investing in.
#1 The Body Shop
If you haven’t already heard of The Body Shop, then you’ve been living underneath a rock. The brand was founded in 1976 in Brighton by Dame Anita Roddick and has been very successful ever since. Anita has always been passionate about ethically sourced and naturally-based ingredients in packaging that could be easily refilled to create less waste.
The brand is also very vocal when it comes to their plans and commitment to the world each year. Their Bio-Bridges Mission aims to regenerate 75 million square metres of wildlife habitat, and they hope to power all of their stores with renewable or carbon balanced energy by the end of 2020. These brand goals, and the evidence to show their steps towards these goals, is very inspiring and it’s refreshing to see a brand with more than just business in mind. The Body Shop is rooted in activism, so if you’re looking to support a brand that speaks out about inequality and protecting our planet then get down and invest.
Ericka Rodriguez, the founder of Axiology, said she was trying to solve the personal problem of ‘finding products that didn’t harm animals or the planet’ when thinking of her career in makeup. She found that other vegan products were drying, so she got to work in her kitchen and eventually found Axiology’s 10 ingredient formula.
Axiology is a ‘100% evil-free’ brand which is cruelty-free and free from palm oil. It contains organic natural oils and isn’t bombarded with unnecessary chemicals which do damage to your skin and the planet in turn. They have lipsticks, balms for your lips, cheeks and eyes, hand sanitiser and adorable merch, so check them out!
#3 Kjaer Weis
Kjaer Weis is a newer brand, established in 2010, who are ‘leading the movement with high-performing, luxury makeup that is, as everything should be, organic and sustainable.’ Although their ingredients are all Certified Natural or Organic, they still reach the luxury standards of beauty with incredibly sleek and sophisticated packaging. These stunning metal compacts can be easily refilled and become something you keep rather than something you dispose of once it’s empty.
They stand out to other sustainable brands as they have a classy high-end look rather than the cliché bamboo lids with greens and browns dominating the colour scheme. Despite the emphasis on luxury though, they make their dedication to being a sustainable and ethical brand known to their consumers which is great.
It has been made clear that the only way this will stop is if we all work together to make lifestyle changes and greener choices, so how can you help to fight climate change and save our planet?
- Avoid single-use plastics
- Shop locally
- Reduce your carbon footprint
- Recycle and reuse where you can (clothes, packaging, bags etc)
- Start a compost-heap
- Shop greener. Buy from ethic and eco-friendly brands
With a little bit of research and a whole lot of love, all of us can help restore our environment and make the world a happier place. If you need somewhere to start, David Attenborough’s latest documentary on Netflix called A Life On Our Planet is a great watch and a real eye-opener!
