If you’re unsure about what makeup you need and which products are vital everyday essentials, this is the post for you! We have compiled a list of the items we deem as being kit must-haves, with recommendations to simplify your product search.

Makeup Essential #1 PRIMER

When creating a makeup look, a primer is essential. It both helps protect the pores, and helps your makeup look last much longer! It also evens out your skin, which creates a perfect base for foundation. Don’t forget to moisturise your lips too.

How To: After moisturising apply your primer before reaching for your makeup, paying special attention to the nose, cheeks and forehead.

Primers We Recommend:

Illamasqua Hydra Veil Primer 30ml

benefit the POREfessional Primer 22ml

Smashbox The Original Photo Finish Foundation Primer 30ml

MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ 100ml (Various Scents)

Makeup Essential #2 FOUNDATION

After applying primer, your skin is ready for the next step which is of course, foundation. The type of foundation you should consider depends on your skin type – if your skin is dry, a bb cream may be more effective as it is not as drying as a regular foundation. If your skin is on the oilier side, you could consider a balancing foundation with moisture control.

How To: After applying primer, add your chosen foundation over top and blend. We recommend using a damp beauty blender or a clean, dry foundation brush for a seamless application.

Foundations We Recommend:

Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup 30ml

bareMinerals Original Loose Mineral Foundation SPF15

MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 Foundation (Various Shades)

Urban Decay Stay Naked Foundation (Various Shades)

Makeup Essential #3 BLUSH, CONTOUR & HIGHLIGHT

After applying your foundation, you’ll want to add some colour back into your face. You can do this by adding blusher, bronzer and contour alongside highlight. Some like to only add blush, whilst others like wearing everything! Ultimately, the goal is to replace that gorgeous glow that makes you look healthy and youthful. Adding highlight and contour adds more dimensions to your face shape, and can inject a little fun into your makeup look as it shines (and sometimes glitters) when your face moves in the light.

How To: Apply contour to the hollows of your cheekbones, start slowly and build up. Blend upwards to create the illusion of a shadow. Blush starts with the apples of your cheeks, blend this along your cheekbones and add a little to your brow bone for an extra pop of colour! Finally dust a little highlight on the high points of your face, on your nose, cupids bow and the tops of your cheekbones.

Blush, Contouring & Highlight We Recommend:

benefit Cheekleaders Pink Squad Palette (Worth £127.50)

Too Faced Cocoa Contour Cocoa-Infused Contouring and Highlighting Palette 28.5g

NIP+FAB Make Up Contour Palette – Medium

PIXI Summer Glow Palette – Sheer Sunshine 24.3g

Makeup Essential #4 MASCARA

You’ll want to add mascara to your everyday makeup to make your eyes appear more open, and to enhance your natural lashes if you don’t wear extensions. If eyeshadow or liner makes your essentials list, apply these beforehand and leave mascara ’til last.

How To: Use a jet-black mascara on both your upper and lower lashes using a gentle wiggle motion to ensure each individual lash is fully coated. If you need to correct your mascara application, use a cotton bud and dampen it slightly and then gently brush the smudged product.

Mascara We Recommend:

benefit They’re Real! Mascara – Black

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

Maybelline Lash Sensational Intense Mascara – Black

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara 12ml

Makeup Essential #5 BROWS

Brows have become an increasingly important feature in your everyday makeup routine. If you want the eyebrow fill to be light and quick, we recommend a tinted brow gel which comes with a mascara style wand, meaning you just brush through your eyebrow hairs and go! For a more textured look, grab a small angled brush and swipe in small upward strokes, starting from the inside moving outwards.

How to: For a gel application, gently brush through the eyebrow hairs in an upwards and outwards motion. With a brow pomade, outline your eyebrows gently and then gently fill in your brows using your brush. Use the same technique with your brow pencil, using gentle pressure for a more natural finish.

Brow Products We Recommend:

benefit Precisely, My Brow Pencil (Various Shades)

benefit Gimme Brow (Various Shades)

benefit Ka-Brow! (Various Shades)
